Starlink’s UK speed tiers: is the more expensive plan worth it?

UK Satellite Internet · Published · Updated

The gap between Starlink’s cheapest and most expensive UK Residential plans is £40 a month. That is £480 over 12 paid months. Before choosing Max, it helps to understand what the extra money can change.

The plans, checked on 25 September 2026

Residential 100 Mbps costs £40 a month and Residential 200 Mbps costs £60. Their download speeds are capped at the figures in the names, and both are offered in selected areas. Residential Max costs £80 and offers the highest available Residential speeds and network priority.

Roam is a separate choice for travel: £55 a month for 100GB of high-speed data or £100 for Unlimited. Residential is the starting point for a fixed home. Availability and equipment terms appear after entering your address.

When a higher cap helps

If the household regularly reaches its current download cap, more capacity can shorten downloads or leave more room for simultaneous use. That is most relevant when several people are active at once or you frequently download large files.

Look at repeated router-to-internet results when the connection feels limited. One good result does not show how the plan behaves every evening. Residential 100 and 200 both list an expected upload range of 15–35 Mbps, so paying for the higher download cap does not promise quicker uploads.

When it does not

A laptop working well beside the router but poorly upstairs points towards local coverage. Paying Starlink more will not make Wi-Fi pass through that wall. Try router placement, Ethernet or an extra access point.

Obstructions are another cause. A tree can interrupt a call even when the download speed between interruptions is excellent. Check the obstruction map before changing plans.

The cost of stepping up

Each £20 monthly step adds £240 over 12 paid months. With the same eligible one-month referral credit on each plan, the difference over the first year is £220. Equipment, delivery and any additional setup costs sit outside those service totals.

Choose the least expensive available plan that meets your needs. If you depend on the connection for work, a tested backup may be more useful than paying for download capacity you rarely use.
