Does Starlink work during a power cut?

Reviewed · UK Satellite Internet

Starlink stops working if its dish or router loses power. A suitable battery or UPS can keep the home equipment running for a while. It cannot guarantee that the wider network remains available throughout the same outage.

What needs power?

Include the dish, router and any switches, mesh units or office access points. Your laptop also needs enough charge. Keeping the dish online will not help a desk connected through a switch that has gone off.

How much backup is enough?

Use the power figures for your kit and the runtime information from the UPS or battery manufacturer. Battery capacity alone does not establish compatibility or runtime: power limits and conversion losses matter too. Test the arrangement before you depend on it.

Keep a second way to get online

A mobile hotspot may work during a short outage, but local mobile sites also depend on power. Test reception at home and keep the phone charged. For essential work, decide which tasks you need to continue and how long you need to sustain them.
