Starlink power use: Standard, Mini and UK running costs

Reviewed · UK Satellite Internet

Starlink lists 75–100 W average consumption for Standard 4 and Standard 4 X, including the supplied router and power equipment. At an example 25p per kWh, continuous use costs £13.50–£18 over 30 days. Mini uses less: its published 20–40 W range gives £3.60–£7.20 on the same assumptions.

Match the figure to your kit

The older Standard Actuated kit has a published average of 50–75 W, compared with 75–100 W for Standard 4, Standard 4 X and Enterprise. Mini is listed at 20–40 W. Starlink measures these at the AC input and includes the dish, supplied Wi-Fi router, power supply and cables. Do not add the supplied router a second time.

An 80 W example

At an average 80 W, the equipment uses 1.92 kWh in 24 hours: 80 ÷ 1,000 × 24. At 25p per kWh, that costs 48p a day, £14.40 over 30 days or £175.20 over 365 days. The 25p rate is an example, not a current tariff quote. Use the unit rate including VAT from your bill.

Measure a normal day

A power supply’s maximum rating is not its average consumption. A suitable plug-in energy meter can show how many kWh your complete setup uses over a day. Temperature and usage can change the result, so one short reading may not represent the month. Add separately powered mesh units or switches if they are outside the measurement.

Battery capacity is a separate calculation

An 80 W load needs 640 Wh over eight hours before allowing for conversion losses. A battery labelled 640 Wh will not necessarily deliver eight hours of usable power. Check the battery’s usable capacity, output and compatibility with your kit. Mini’s lower published consumption is useful for portable setups, but the power connection still has to suit it.
