What is Starlink latency and does it matter?

Reviewed · UK Satellite Internet

Latency is the time data takes to travel across a connection, usually reported as a round trip in milliseconds. It affects how promptly a game or call responds. Download speed measures how much data the connection can carry, which is a different thing.

Why satellite distance matters

Starlink’s satellites are in low Earth orbit, much closer than traditional geostationary satellites. That reduces the distance the signal travels. The route through the rest of the internet still matters, so a nearby game server can produce a different result from one on another continent.

Which UK latency figure should you use?

Starlink’s GB performance document directs customers to its map for current expected latency by location. It does not promise one UK-wide ping for every home or game server. Use that estimate when choosing, then test the actual calls and games you use. A higher download cap is not a guarantee of lower latency.

Finding the cause of a stuttering call or game

An average latency figure can hide short spikes or dropped packets. Check the Starlink app for obstructions and outages. Then try the same activity beside the router or over Ethernet, with other devices quiet. If that helps, weak Wi-Fi or competing uploads may be adding delay. If the problem remains, record when it happens and which service you were using.
