Is Starlink suitable for video calls and gaming?

Reviewed · UK Satellite Internet

Starlink can handle video calls and online gaming. A clear sky view and a steady connection matter more for these activities than a high peak download speed. Brief obstructions that go unnoticed during streaming can disconnect a call or game.

Video calls use upload too

A call sends your voice and camera feed as well as receiving everyone else’s. Test while the household is using the connection normally. If a cloud backup makes calls break up, try scheduling it outside working hours before changing plans.

Games respond to latency

Downloads determine how long a game update takes. Latency and packet loss affect play once it starts. Competitive games are less forgiving of spikes, so test the games and servers you use. Try Ethernet or a strong Wi-Fi connection to remove a weak local link from the test.

When an interruption is costly

For client calls or essential remote work, keep a tested fallback such as a mobile hotspot if one works at your property. A faster Residential tier does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
