Does Starlink work with a work VPN?

Reviewed · UK Satellite Internet

Yes, many work VPNs work with Starlink. The VPN must support NAT traversal, which lets it work through Starlink’s shared IPv4 addressing. A separate employer rule requiring a fixed public IP can still be a problem. Ask your IT team about both before replacing the connection you use for work.

What to ask IT

A useful question is: “Does our VPN support NAT traversal, and do you restrict access to a fixed public IP?” Starlink lists OpenVPN and WireGuard among the client VPN protocols that generally work with CGNAT. It lists PPTP and L2TP as more troublesome. These are compatibility indications, not a guarantee for every company configuration.

Test the work you actually do

Log in, open your internal applications and send a normal work file. Then try a call while the VPN remains connected. Passing a public speed test does not show whether the company’s file server, remote desktop or authentication system will work. Do this before cancelling the old broadband if you can.

If only the VPN fails

Check whether ordinary websites still load at the same time. A VPN-only failure gives IT a different starting point from a complete outage. Record the time and the error shown. Starlink can investigate the underlying connection, but it says VPN troubleshooting belongs with the VPN provider.

Why tests can change with the VPN on

A VPN sends traffic through another server and can add delay. Starlink also warns that its app may not function correctly while a VPN is active. If your employer permits it, compare the app’s result with the VPN disconnected. Do not disable company security controls to make a test look faster.
