Choosing a Starlink position when the leaves are falling

UK Satellite Internet · Published

A gap through bare branches can look like a good place for a Starlink dish. By May, the same view may be blocked by leaves. If you are choosing a position in autumn or winter, look at the whole tree canopy as well as the app’s result on the day.

Allow for the tree in leaf

Use the Starlink app’s obstruction tool at each accessible position you are considering. Keep a labelled screenshot so you know which scan belongs to which spot. If branches cross the required view, consider how much space leaves will fill.

Look at nearby hedges and young trees too. Routine growth can turn a marginal position into a troublesome one. Where possible, choose a clear view that does not depend on regular pruning.

Find the simplest clear position

Moving the dish a few metres sideways may avoid a tree without putting it high on the house. Compare the cable route as you try different spots. A clear position at the far end of the garden is less useful if the approved cable cannot reach or the route crosses a driveway.

Only scan places you can reach safely. If the proposed mount is on a roof, have that position assessed; a phone scan from the patio does not establish the view up there.

Before fixing the mount

Check where the cable will enter, how it will be protected and whether the indoor router position gives useful coverage. Leave access for later maintenance. A reachable installation makes it easier to inspect a cable or adjust the position if the surroundings change.

Once the dish is running, review its obstruction map after it has collected data. If calls drop despite good download results, look for a repeated obstruction before paying for a faster plan.
