Setup and equipment

Can you install Starlink yourself or do you need an installer?

Reviewed · UK Satellite Internet

Starlink is designed for self-installation. If you have a clear sky view from a secure, accessible position, getting connected can be a straightforward job with the supplied kit and app. A permanent wall or roof installation adds building work, and the position you need determines whether that work is suitable for you.

Before ordering, check where it could go

Use the Starlink app to check the sky from positions you can reach safely. Look at the cable route into the house, where the router and power supply will sit and whether you need permission to fit anything. A clear spot at the bottom of the garden is only useful if you can connect it to the house. If trees, access or the building leave you unsure whether installation is possible, ask a fitter to assess that before you order.

What the basic setup involves

The Standard kit includes a kickstand, so you can start from a suitable accessible surface without buying a wall bracket. Follow your kit’s guide to connect the dish, router and power, then use the app to align Standard or Mini and set a Wi-Fi password. Standard Actuated and Performance Gen 1 dishes move themselves and must not be adjusted by hand. A working connection does not need an installer appointment.

What permanent fitting asks of you

For an accessible wall mount, you need to judge whether the surface can support it, choose the correct fixings and identify pipes or electrical cables before drilling. The cable entry must suit the wall construction and be sealed against rain. These are practical building skills beyond following the app. If you cannot confidently assess the surface, hidden services or weatherproofing, have that part fitted professionally.

Height and access can change the decision

A ladder alone does not make a high mount a suitable DIY job. You need a safe way to work with tools and handle the dish. Roof work, awkward eaves and positions that require leaning or reaching are reasons to use an installer with suitable access equipment. You can still do the app setup yourself. Tell the fitter where you need internet indoors: mounting the dish and extending Wi-Fi to an office are separate jobs.

Order the kit, then arrange the fitting

Once you have a workable position and cable route, order directly from Starlink through our referral link and check the offer in checkout. If you want an independent installer, give them the exact kit shown on your order, photographs of the proposed position and the cable route. Agree the mount, any extra cable and the work included, and ask about lead time. To avoid booking around an uncertain delivery estimate, confirm the fitting date once the equipment has arrived.

If installation is included in your order

Use the booking instructions supplied with your order before paying for a separate visit. For a bundled free installation, Starlink says to use the link in the scheduling email. Check the scope and any extras. Waiting for a fitter does not hold back the service billing date, so read the dates on your order even if you cannot yet use the kit.
