What comes in a Starlink kit and what else might you need?

Reviewed · UK Satellite Internet

A Starlink kit supplies the dish, power equipment and cables needed for its basic setup. Standard uses a separate Wi-Fi router; Mini has Wi-Fi built into the dish. Check the exact contents of the kit in your order before buying accessories.

What the current Standard kit includes

Starlink’s Standard 4 X listing includes the dish, kickstand, Router 3, a 15 m Starlink cable and the power equipment. Router 3 has two Ethernet LAN ports. The kickstand lets you try a suitable ground-level position before deciding whether you need a permanent wall, pole or roof mount.

Where the router and cable go

Measure the whole cable route, including the entry into the building and the distance to the router. A 15 m cable can run out quickly when it follows the side of a house. Put the router where it can serve the rooms you use, rather than wherever the cable first enters. Thick walls may still call for an access point or Ethernet.

Check the model before buying accessories

Mini has Wi-Fi in the dish and uses different power and mounting arrangements. Older Standard kits also differ: advice about a separate Ethernet adapter does not apply to every generation. Check the model on your order before buying a mount, cable or network accessory.

Does the dish need aiming?

Standard 4 X and Mini use the app’s alignment tool. Once correctly positioned, their antennas track the satellites electronically. Older actuated models move themselves; do not try to force their dish into position by hand.
