What is Starlink and how does it work in the UK?

Reviewed · UK Satellite Internet

Starlink is broadband delivered by satellites. An outdoor dish connects your home to the network and a router provides Wi-Fi indoors. It can serve homes beyond the reach of decent fixed broadband, provided the dish has a clear enough view of the sky.

How the connection reaches your home

When you open a website, the request travels from your device through the router and dish to Starlink’s satellite network, then on to the internet. The reply comes back through that network. You need electricity for the equipment, but no phone line or fibre cable into the house.

Why the dish needs so much open sky

Starlink’s satellites orbit much closer to Earth than traditional geostationary satellites and move across the sky. The dish switches between them. A tree can therefore interrupt a connection that was working a moment earlier. Use the Starlink app to scan a possible dish position before ordering.

What you buy

You choose a service plan and the equipment offered for your address. The kit is designed for self-installation. Extra mounts or help with roof work may cost more. You pay Starlink for service and manage the account through its app or website.
